Forget Everything You Know about Teaching: Flipped Classroom Approach

Hello, how are you? I hope you are all doing well. This week in our technology course, we learned about Flipped classroom approach. Me and my friend Emircan (Click on his name to see his post about this topic if you are interested) created a flipped vocabulary video for 5th grade students about the "Health" unit. We also prepared an assure plan accordingly. In this post I will be talking about the video we created and the flipped approach in general.

What is Flipped Approach?

Basically, it is the direct opposite of the traditional notion of classroom-based learning. In this approach, students are given the learning material before the actual class. They practice the material before coming to class and in class, they discuss the topic or involve in problem-solving activities to understand the topic even more.

The Design Process

Our teacher shared some examples with us, so we checked them before starting to create a video to get a better notion. We had two options: preparing a flipped grammar teaching video or a vocabulary teaching video. We chose the latter one and we decided to prepare a video based on the "Health" unit. We used Canva for visuals and CapCut for editing. We voiced the video by using Vocaroo and we added a QR code at the end of the video which opens a quiz for students to practice the video that they just watched. This quiz was prepared using WordWall (You can see the video we prepared down below). After we are done with the process we wrote an assure plan accordingly (You can see it down below as well).

Experiences

Thanks to my friend, the process wasn't as hard as thought it would be. However, it was still challenging when compared to the corpus task. Finding and mixing tons of visuals was the hardest part because it took a long time. In the end, I had a lot of fun working on this task. I am planning to use Flipped Classroom Approach here and there with such videos in my own lectures in the future.

What are your thoughts? Would you use this approach in your own lecture? Please let me know in the comments. See you in my next post. Take care!!!
