What is it?
It is a new way of learning that aims to develop a skillset which is required in todays world. These skills are very important especially in digital world and in the field of economy. But they can also be very effective in language education.
Why is it important for language learning?
Under 21st century learning there are a lot of skills that need to be met. Students can use and develop these skills while producing content for their classes. This way, they can become better learners overall. But in a language context, critical thinking and collaboration are the most important ones.
Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is the key of today's education system. It means being able to evaluate and analyze an issue objectively. In a language learning context, it enables students to understand more from listening and reading activities. This means that critical thinking enables students to comprehend, analyze and evaluate much better. It also enables students to show respect to other students' opinions making them more communicatory.
Collaboration
Collaboration is also very important in language learning. Collaboration's definition is working with someone in order to generate something. In order to learn a language, you need to be in communication with someone else. Because this way you can get things done much easier. Moreover, it is basically the only way you can utilize and practice the language. Therefore collaboration is a very crucial skill in language learning and acquiring a language cannot occur without this skill.
Conclusion
To sum up, 21st century learning is today's learning model and it is pretty much needed in every field. One of these fields is language learning. 21st century learning has a lot of skills under its name. Critical Thinking and Collaboration are two of these skills and they are very important in language learning. All in all, 21st century learning is very crucial in language learning and it cannot be missed out!
