Data Driven Language Learning: Using a Corpus Query Tool

Hello again! How are you, I hope you are all doing fine. I am here again with another topic related to our technology course. This week, me and my classmates had an assignment related to Data Driven Language Learning or corpus use to be specific. In this assignment we created a material based on corpus-based teaching. In this post I will be talking about Data Driven Language Learning and my experiences creating the material.

What is Data Driven Language Learning?

Data driven learning is basically learning the language by examining authentic examples of a language rather than examining the materials that are created for teaching purposes only. Using a corpus is a great example of Data Driven Language Learning. By using a corpus, students see thousands of different authentic usages of the target word. Accordingly, we prepared a worksheet that requires corpus use to complete the exercises.

The Design Process and My Experiences

First of all, we worked as a group of four. Please check the posts and blogs of my friends Emircan, Rabia and Mihriban as well. Since we worked together in both the material and the lesson plan, it was not that hard overall. The hardest part was actually deciding on the exercises of the worksheet. We tried to make sure that every instruction was crystal clear and understandable. Moreover, we added a detailed guideline on how to use corpus to make sure that the students have ne problem exploring the given words in the activities on their own by using a corpus query tool. To make things even easier we wanted students to use corpusmate.com as a corpus query tool since it is the easiest one to use out there. We also wrote a lesson plan according to the ASSURE model to check the adequateness of our technology integration to the class. You can see the material and the lesson plan by clicking the given links below.

Final Thoughts

The experience was quite good thanks to my group friends. I learned about the effective use of corpus query tools and I also learned a lot about preparing a worksheet.  I hope our instructor likes our work as well :) What do you think about Data Driven Language Learning?  Please let me know by leaving a comment! See you all soon!!!
